2001 RACE FASTEST LAP: MICHAEL SCHUMACHER (FERRARI), 1min 21.151sec.

Michael Schumacher grabbed the 46th pole position of his career here this afternoon and his fifth here at the Circuit de Catalunya, although he had to work hard to beat his Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello.

SCUDERIA FERRARI MARLBORO (1st M. Schumacher/2nd Barrichello)

Technical: No changes to car specification for today.

Sporting: On the first two runs Schumacher admitted he made two small mistakes and also confirmed that the chassis set-up was not so good. He made some aerodynamic changes and ride height adjustments then set fastest time.

Barrichello generally satisfied apart from making a slight mistake warming up his tyres for the final run.

Quotes: Schumacher: "It was a fair fight with my colleague and really enjoyable."

BMW WILLIAMSF1 TEAM (3rd R. Schumacher/4th Montoya)

Technical: Major set-up changes since yesterday but no technical specification changes.

Sporting: Ralf Schumacher reported that the FW24 felt much better balanced after the set-up changes and with more rubber down on the circuit. Montoya suffered a misfire in his race car, switched to the spare and then altered the set-up for his final run.

Quotes: Schumacher: "Even before we made the chassis changes I could see that Friday's session was not as bad as it looked."

WEST McLAREN MERCEDES (5th Raikkonen/7th Coulthard)

Technical: No technical changes to the cars for today.

Sporting: Both drivers reported much improved handling balance now that more rubber was down on the racing line. Raikkonen had no problems while Coulthard changed his set-up after his second run, realised he had gone the wrong way and reverted to the original set-up for his final run only to lose time on the second sector and failed to improve.

Quotes: Coulthard: "I think tomorrow will simply be a battle to score points."

MILD SEVEN RENAULT F1 TEAM (6th Button/9th Trulli)

Technical: No technical changes to the cars for today.

Sporting: Button well pleased with the handling balance of his R202 and was extremely happy to have qualified ahead of one of the McLarens. Trulli initially not so happy with straight line speed so switched to the spare car in qualifying and after a succession of minor problem vaulted from 10th to ninth on his final run.

Quotes: Trulli: "After that I will probably take the spare car for the race."

SAUBER PETRONAS (8th Heidfeld/11th Massa)

Technical: No technical changes to the cars for today.

Sporting: Heidfeld said he was pretty happy, although he frankly admitted that he had not expected his rivals at Williams to make such a big jump forward. He also said the car was better on high speed corners. Massa made a mistake on sector two during his final run.

Quotes: Massa: "I was a little angry with myself but the car was great and well balanced."

ORANGE ARROWS (10th Frentzen/14th Bernoldi)

Technical: No technical changes to the cars for today.

Sporting: Team continuing to make positive progress with new undertray and front wing set-up. Frentzen very pleased to qualify in top ten while Bernoldi also said car was impressively well balanced.

Quotes: Bernoldi: "I had a touch of understeer but nothing major and this is my best F1 qualifying position so far."

DHL JORDAN HONDA (12th Fisichella/19th Sato)

Technical: No technical changes to the cars for today.

Sporting: Fisichella had a positive day and admitted that he felt he got the best out of the car which had good handling balance. Sato spun during the morning and had to work with the spare car engineer Dominic Harlow after his own race engineer James Key flew home for the birth of his first child.

Quotes: Fisichella: "We need more downforce to help the grip levels tomorrow plus more power."

LUCKY STRIKE BAR HONDA (13th Panis/16th Villeneuve)

Technical: No technical changes to the cars for today.

Sporting: Panis was very disappointed yesterday's showing as he went off on his first run when Raikkonen half spun in front of him, an incident which slightly damaged the BAR's undertray. Villeneuve took Panis's settings but admitted he didn't have time during the morning to work out the best set-up.

Quotes: Panis: "It was shame that we failed to get the best out of the car during this session."

JAGUAR RACING (15th Irvine/17th de la Rosa)

Technical: No changes to the cars for today but de la Rosa took spare after yesterday's problems.

Sporting: Irvine ran harder prime Michelin compound while de la Rosa opted for softer option rubber. Both drivers found the cars performing rather better than they had expected.

Quotes: Irvine: "We are about a second and a half faster than we had expected, but we don't really know why."

PANASONIC TOYOTA RACING(18th Salo/20th McNish)

Technical: No technical changes to the cars today.

Sporting: McNish had a clutch problem during the morning then had a spin this afternoon. Salo was disappointing, reckoning they could have gone two-tenths quicker with more downforce.

Quotes: McNish: "The time is a bit better than we expected but the grid position is disappointed."

KL MINARDI ASIATECH (21st Webber/22nd Yoong)

Technical: No technical changes to the cars today.

Sporting: Both Webber and Yoong lost nose wings at the final right-hander onto the pit straight during the course of the day.

Quotes: Giancarlo Minardi: "The time for Webber was particularly impressive considering our position."
